This building was commissioned as a key part of a wider scheme to trans- form an old industrial dock into a world class marina, the Royal Quays. The lock control building had to provide a symbolic statement about the quality of the marina, and anticipate the operational detail. The building uses colour, geometry, presence and materials to identify the entrance into the marina from the river, and provided orientation within the open landscape. The view of the locks from the control gallery is commanding, whilst staff can clearly oversee activities around the marina itself from the general office.
