This project marks Phase 2 of our conversion of a listed stables block into a dedicated teaching facility for Low Carbon Technology on Herefordshire, Ludlow and North Shropshire College’s Holme Lacy Campus.
The project follows hot on the heels of our fast-track Phase 1 project with an even higher set of environmental accreditations, including AECB CarbonLite Retrofit.
We achieved a heating demand of just 50kWh/m2.yr, an air-tightness of better than 1.0m3/m2.hr and an overheating risk of less than 3%, with thermal bridges minimised and draughts designed out. According to AECB, this is the first time the demanding new environmental standard has been awarded to a project with listed building approval.
During the retrofit works, as much as possible of the existing historic fabric was retained, including the existing brick walls, concrete floors and steel roof trusses. To this was added a suite of carefully considered and low-impact upgrades to the building fabric and services.
Key interventions include 40kW of solar PV, solar water heating, diathonite insulating render, woodfibre insulation, recycled wallboard, recycled flooring, underfloor heating, Air Source Heat Pumps, MVHR and triple glazing.
The facility was officially visited by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh on 1st October 2024.
